Main Exclusions

The following are only the main exclusions; please see sections 7, 11 and 12 of the Policy Terms and Conditions for full details of all exclusions.

 

Unemployment claims

You will not receive Unemployment benefit in the following circumstances:

  • If you were not in continuous work for 6 months immediately before your employment ended (if you were not in work for 2 weeks or less, we will not count this as a break in your employment) (paragraph 11.1);
  • Unemployment caused or resulting from your employment ending within the first 90 days of cover i.e. the exclusion period (paragraph 11.2);
  • You being told, or made aware either before the start date or within the exclusion period that your employment will end. This is irrespective of when employment actually ends (paragraph 11.3);
  • Misconduct which contributes or leads to your dismissal (paragraph 11.6);
  • Resignation, voluntary unemployment or voluntary redundancy (paragraph 11.9);
  • If you are self-employed and your business temporarily stops trading (paragraph 11.12).

Exclusion Period

There is an exclusion period for unemployment claims for the first 90 days of the policy. If during this period you are made unemployed or made aware that you are going to be made unemployed, you would be unable to claim. After the 90 days have elapsed, the exclusion no longer applies.

Accident and Sickness Claims

You will not receive Incapacity benefit for any claim, which is caused by, or resulting from

  • a Pre-existing conditionThis is a physical or mental condition whether diagnosed or not, which you knew about or in our reasonable opinion should have known about, or for which you received treatment prior to the start date. ; but you will be entitled to benefit if you have not suffered from that condition for two years before the first date you became unable to work. You have not suffered from a condition if throughout that two year period you (paragraph 7.1):
    • have not consulted a doctor for that condition (paragraph 7.1.1); and
    • have not received treatment for that condition (paragraph 7.1.2); and
    • have been free of symptoms of that condition (paragraph 7.1.3);
  • attempted suicide or self-inflicted injuries (paragraph 7.2);
  • alcohol or drugs, unless they are prescribed for treatment by a doctor (paragraph 7.4);
  • backache and related conditions, including injuries, which are not supported by medical evidence (paragraph 7.5);
  • psychiatric illness or mental disorders including depression, bereavement, stress, or stress related conditions which are not diagnosed by a consultant who is a member or the Royal College of Psychiatrists and is recognised by that Royal College as being a consultant (paragraph 7.6);
  • for any period when your incapacity is not confirmed by a doctor (paragraph 7.9.2).

Chronic Conditions

If, prior to the start date, you suffer from a chronic conditionThis is a condition that occurs prior to the start date and continues indefinitely, or cannot be cured or eradicated or that recurs or requires treatment you would not be eligible to claim for loss of income due to that condition. If the chronic condition develops after the inception of the policy, you would be eligible to claim for loss of income due to that condition.
